Our hair can get pretty dry, especially during the colder, drier months. One thing you can do combat dry hair is to examine the way you wash your hair.
Are you are using a shampoo that has ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. Sulfates are harsh detergents that can dry out your hair and scalp.
What should you use instead? Use a shampoo with milder ingredients like sodium laureth sulfate TEA lauryl or laureth sulfates or one that says "sulfate free". If you have very dry hair or naturally curly hair, try using a cleansing conditioner or moisturizing shampoo (check the label to make sure there are no harsh sulfates).
When you wash, spread the cleanser over your fingers and massage it into your scalp. Unless you have heavy product buildup in your hair, you don't need to worry about getting the cleanser through your hair. If you do have product buildup smooth any left over cleanser through the length of your hair carefully working out the buildup. Don't rub or scrub, as this will damage and dry out your hair. Hair breaks and splits easily, so be gentle with it to minimize breakage and dryness.
Make you rinse well by parting the hair all over and letting the water run over your scalp as you massage away any buildup.
Have you made the switch to a sulfate free shampoo or a cleansing conditioner? Did you notice less dryness? Did scalp dryness and irritation disappear? Leave a comment and let us know. Try a new cleanser today and let us know how it worked for you!
